The volume, co-authored by Denisa-Adriana Oprea and Georgiana Udrea, outlines key topics in communication theory. In addition to providing an in-depth examination of “classical” theories such as symbolic interactionism, cultivation theory, and the uses and gratifications theory, it introduces in the curriculum of Romanian universities topics that have been little or not at all discussed until now, such as uncertainty reduction theory, coordinated management of meaning, relational dialectics, Kenneth Burke’s dramatism, or the muted group theory. Its goal is, on the one hand, to familiarize students with and deepen their understanding of fundamental theoretical ideas and models in communication theory and, on the other hand, to illustrate their applicability in various communication contexts. The selection of topics not only illustrates different forms of communication (interpersonal, public, mass, and intercultural) but also emphasises the diversity of theoretical traditions that have shaped the development of communication theory as a field (sociopsychological, phenomenological, critical, etc.). Thus, the volume serves as a bridge between communication theory and the challenges of contemporary practice.
