A new book entitled “Ukrainian Refugees in Central and Eastern Europe: Public Debates, Strategic Narratives and Practices” (editor: Mălina Ciocea) has been published at Springer in February 2026.
Researchers from the Center of Communication and Public Relations contributed to the book by authoring chapters such as “The Coverage of the Ukrainian Refugee Crisis in the Romanian Media: Dominant Themes and Narratives” (Bianca-Florentina Cheregi, Mălina Ciocea), exploring the positions taken by the media towards the topic of the Ukrainian refugee crisis and the modes of engagement and courses of action proposed to the public, “Volunteer Humanitarianism and Repoliticisation in Romania’s Response to the Ukrainian Refugee Crisis. Insights From Investigative Media Reports (Elena Negrea-Busuioc, Florența Toader), looking into how this refugee crisis has been portrayed across major investigative journalism platforms, and “Final Remarks Towards a New Research Agenda on Ukrainian Refugees” (Bianca-Florentina Cheregi, Florența Toader), discussing new problematizations which add new meaning to the refugee crisis.
The book highlights the combined role of media narratives, humanitarian mobilisation, political discourse, public diplomacy, and cultural participation in shaping the experiences of refugees and public responses towards them. At the same time, given the geographical, cultural and metaphorical closeness of the authors to their object of study, the book is uniquely positioned to launch problematizations on the validity of concepts and analytical stances employed in the analysis of the Ukrainian refugee crisis.
